EU-Asia Connectivity in Higher Education: The Role of the ASEM Education Process
On behalf of the Jean Monnet Chair “Connecting Europe and Asia: People, Power, and Policies” (CEAPPP) you are cordially invited to participate in the upcoming lecture on “EU-Asia Connectivity in Higher Education: The Role of the ASEM Education Process” organised by the Department of International Political Economy of East Asia, Faculty of East Asian Studies, Ruhr-Universität Bochum.

The lecture will be delivered by Prof. Dr. Azirah Hashim, Emeritus Professor at the Faculty of Languages and Linguistics and the Asia-Europe Institute, Universiti Malaya, Malaysia.

In her lecture, Prof. Hashim will discuss Asia-Europe connectivity in the area of higher education in the context of the ASEM Education Process (AEP). The lecture will critically assess the demand for and the role of the AEP in Asia-Europe cooperation, its contributions, challenges, and prospects. Following an account of the background of the Asia Europe Meeting (ASEM) and its contribution to Asia-Europe cooperation in the area of higher education an outline of the AEP and its priorities will be given and the development of higher education through ASEM education meetings at ministerial and stakeholder levels and through the establishment of the ASEM Education Secretariat will be traced. The lecture will then address the question of how the role of the AEP could be intensified in order to increase further the prospects for higher educational collaboration in the AEP.

Azirah Hashim
Emeritus Professor at the Faculty of Languages and Linguistics and the Asia-Europe Institute @Universiti Malaya, Malaysia
Her previous roles at the university include Executive Director, Asia-Europe Institute; Director, Centre for ASEAN Regionalism; Dean, Humanities Research Cluster; and Dean, Faculty of Languages and Linguistics. Currently, she is a member of the steering group for the ASEAN Higher Education Community of Practice, SEAMEO RIHED-SHARE and a member of the Standing Working Group of ASEM Education. She is also President of the International Association of Applied Linguistics and Humboldt Ambassador Scientist, Alexander von Humboldt Foundation, Germany from 2021 to 2024. Publications include authored and co-edited books, English in Southeast Asia and ASEAN: Transformation of Language Habitats, 2021 (Routledge), Asia and Europe in the 21st Century: New Anxieties, New Opportunities, 2021(Routledge), and Communicating with Asia: the future of English as a Global Language, 2016 (Cambridge University Press).

Prof. Bersick is the Executive Director of (CEAC) at Ruhr University Bochum (RUB), Germany. He also holds a second Jean Monnet Chair of ‘Connecting Europe and Asia: People, Power and Policies’ (CEAPPP). He obtained a first Jean Monnet Chair during the period 2016-19 “International Political Economy of EU-Asia Relations” (IPEEAR). Prof. Bersick heads the Department of ‘International Political Economy of East Asia’ at the Faculty of East Asian Studies at RUB.
